Effusion Cooling

Combustor cooling is conducted in two primary forms, being wall cooling and effusion cooled. Some combustors utilise both forms.

In general a wall cooled combustor will have fewer holes of a greater diameter and utilise the shape of the combustor to facilitate effective cooling, whereas an effusion cooled combustor has many thousands of small holes acutely angled to the side wall of an essentially conically form. Both types of combustor can also have a ceramic thermal barrier coating on the hot side.

The generally accepted machining method for the drilling of the effusion holes is by Laser. Winbro can offer a number of Laser Drilling solutions including high speed drilling – DOF (Drilling On the Fly).
