VANE Seal Slots
Dependant upon engine design, Seal Slots are strategically machined into the end (wedge) faces of Turbine Blades, Vanes and Segments to provide sealing during ring assembly. The slots are fitted with inserts, which are brazed to create a labyrinth joint.
Seal slots are traditionally ‘EDM Die-Sink’ machined, using shaped Graphite or Copper Electrodes. The cost of manufacturing the slots are high due to the slow metal removal rates and the high cost of the precision shaped electrodes. Additional environmental concerns over using an oil based dielectric, prompts many customers to look at alternative manufacturing methods.
Winbro’s HSM – High Speed EDM Milling process is faster, uses low cost brass tubular electrodes and utilises a more environmentally friendly deionised water dielectric.
